When the study was published, numerous people tweeted or Facebook messaged me the results, and expressed their disappointment and disgust about the stigma surrounding mental illness. You’re a mental health advocate! How can you, of all people, say that you may have a problem dating someone who’s mentally ill? You’re such a hypocrite! But at the same time, the truth is that it’s not always a good idea to date someone with a mental illness. And that’s not stigmatising the person in question. That’s just taking care of yourself. Below I break down three common situations, and talk about why in each one I either would or wouldn’t date a person with a mental illness. The girl has a mental illness, but she’s stable and has it under control Mental illness is treatable, and if the girl in question had sought help for her illness and had learned how to manage it such that it had minimal or no impact on her life, then I’d feel privileged to date her.

How to cope day-to-day Accept your feelings Despite the different symptoms and types of mental illnesses, many families who have a loved one with mental illness, share similar experiences. You may find yourself denying the warning signs, worrying what other people will think because of the stigma, or wondering what caused your loved one to become ill. Dating can often be a challenge for singles — especially online dating — but dating when you have a mental, physical, or emotional disability can make it that much more troublesome. It doesn’t matter if you’re a disabled single looking for a great date or a long .
Most of the papers focus on practical or theoretical issues raised by the laws themselves, or the jurisprudential, social and political choices that shape the drafting and enactment of laws. Nonetheless, every paper is built on the conviction that disability prejudice is a fundamental force behind the exclusion of people with disabilities from a myriad of social and economic opportunities, and one author in particular writes in detail about the personal and systemic consequences of persistent disability prejudice and stereotypes.
It is my claim that disability prejudice has been viewed through the lens of prejudices such as anti-Semitism, racism, feminism and homophobia — intolerances that may not be pre-existing, but have been generally recognized and theorized earlier in time. While many prejudices may share certain elements of behaviour or even a common trajectory of development, they are not equivalent in their historical, social or psychological dynamics.
To assume that they are equivalent poses a theoretical straitjacket on prejudices, allowing us to fall into the habit of believing that perpetrators of prejudice all act and think a certain way, and victims of prejudice share inherent characteristics. We confidently set legal and social prohibitions on the former in order to protect the latter, and we are then surprised to learn that there is a disjunction between the goals we set for disability discrimination laws and the experiences of prejudice that people with disabilities continue to undergo.
The claim that modern society is unfamiliar with disability prejudice may seem incredible in the face of governmental findings, the reports of non-governmental organisations NGOs and United Nations UN bodies, and the enactment of national and international disability anti-discrimination laws. The place of disabled persons is everywhere.
Persons with disabilities should be guaranteed equal opportunity through the elimination of all socially determined barriers, be they physical, financial, social or psychological, which exclude or restrict full participation in society. The first binding regional convention concerning discrimination against people with disabilities finally entered into force last year, and the United Nations UN General Assembly has just convened an Ad Hoc Committee to actively investigate and set proposals for a binding international instrument concerning discrimination against people with disabilities.
In fact, I do not believe that disability prejudice is unheard of, at least in modern Western society, and all over the world, nations are paying attention to the reality of discrimination claimed by people with disabilities. I do, however, believe that the precise inability or unwillingness of many people, including people who have suffered from other kinds of prejudices themselves, to truly grapple with the what and why of disability prejudice lies at the heart of much of the resistance and backlash that disability discrimination legislation and policies have recently faced in the United States.

Understanding Them 1 Don’t assume that someone has an intellectual disability based on the ease of their speech. Some people who have difficulty speaking, such as people with cerebral palsy and some autistic people, are on average just as smart as anyone else. A disability accent, slow speech, or halting speech doesn’t always mean an intellectual disability. People who can’t speak can be of any intelligence level. Body language does not relate to intelligence either.
Looking away while listening, and fidgeting constantly, are typical autistic traits. Don’t assume that this means they aren’t paying close attention, or that they can’t understand. Disabled people may do things that society considers unusual: Most of this behavior serves a purpose—calming themselves down, communicating their needs, expressing feelings, or simply having fun. Recognize that it’s okay to be different, and that there’s no need to worry about behavior that doesn’t hurt anyone.
If they are having a harder time today than they did yesterday, remember that they aren’t doing this on purpose, and work on being patient.

These barriers impinge particularly on the well-being of persons with intellectual, mental or multiple disabilities. There are a great many countries where women are subjected to social, cultural and economic disadvantages which impede their access to, for example, health care, education, vocational training and employment. Women with disabilities may be particularly at risk due to stigmas associated with both disability and gender inequality “Thus we would now like to focus our attention on the negative consequences for women of the persistence of certain cultural barriers that make them the victims of a two-fold discrimination: Much has been written on discrimination against women, but very little has so far been done to deal adequately with the problem of disabled women.
The few attempts made have been based on a mistaken approach, since they treat the acute problem of disability as part of the general topic of discrimination against women.
