Polycarp was martyred c. But Polycarp also was not only instructed by apostles, and conversed with many who had seen Christ, but was also, by apostles in Asia, appointed bishop of the Church in Smyrna, whom I also saw in my early youth, for he tarried [on earth] a very long time, and, when a very old man, gloriously and most nobly suffering martyrdom, departed this life, having always taught the things which he had learned from the apostles, and which the Church has handed down, and which alone are true. To these things all the Asiatic Churches testify, as do also those men who have succeeded Polycarp down to the present time, a man who was of much greater weight, and a more stedfast witness of truth, than Valentinus, and Marcion, and the rest of the heretics. He it was who, coming to Rome in the time of Anicetus caused many to turn away from the aforesaid heretics to the Church of God, proclaiming that he had received this one and sole truth from the apostles, that, namely, which is handed down by the Church. There are also those who heard from him that John, the disciple of the Lord, going to bathe at Ephesus, and perceiving Cerinthus within, rushed out of the bath-house without bathing, exclaiming, “Let us fly, lest even the bath-house fall down, because Cerinthus, the enemy of the truth, is within. Then, again, the Church in Ephesus, founded by Paul, and having John remaining among them permanently until the times of Trajan, is a true witness of the tradition of the apostles. Irenaeus also mentions Polycarp in his letter to Florinus. These opinions, Florinus, that I may speak in mild terms, are not of sound doctrine; these opinions are not consonant to the Church, and involve their votaries in the utmost impiety; these opinions, even the heretics beyond the Church’s pale have never ventured to broach; these opinions, those presbyters who preceded us, and who were conversant with the apostles, did not hand down to thee. For, while I was yet a boy, I saw thee in Lower Asia with Polycarp, distinguishing thyself in the royal court, and endeavouring to gain his approbation.

Little is recorded of St. Thomas the Apostle, nevertheless thanks to the fourth Gospel his personality is clearer to us than that of some others of the Twelve. His name occurs in all the lists of the Synoptists Matthew John he plays a distinctive part.
First, when Jesus announced His intention of returning to Judea to visit Lazarus , “Thomas” who is called Didymus [the twin], said to his fellow disciples: Again it was St. Thomas who during the discourse before the Last Supper raised an objection:

Thomas The motte-and-bailey castle at St Clears is situated on the junction between the Taf and Cynin rivers, probably at the limit of navigable water for the shallow-draught boats that the Norman settlers would have used. The substantial motte, 8m high and an oval 20m by 10m across its top, lies on the north of the site and is well preserved. The large, rectangular bailey extended 50m south of the motte as far as the house on the far side of the site. There are reports of stonework being visible on the summit of the motte, suggesting that it carried a masonry structure in its later history.
The castle was probably founded in the late 11th century, judging from the fact that a Cluniac priory was established at St Clears around and this would almost certainly have been after the foundation of the castle. The early history of the castle is obscure.

The Apocrypha and the Church Name and notion Etymologically, the derivation of Apocrypha is very simple, being from the Greek apokryphos, hidden, and corresponding to the neuter plural of the adjective. The use of the singular, “Apocryphon”, is both legitimate and convenient, when referring to a single work. When we would attempt to seize the literary sense attaching to the word, the task is not so easy.
It has been employed in various ways by early patristic writers, who have sometimes entirely lost sight of the etymology. Thus it has the connotation “uncanonical” with some of them. Naturally, Catholics refuse to admit such a denomination, and we employ “deuterocanonical” to designate this literature, which non-Catholics conventionally and improperly know as the “Apocrypha”. The original and proper sense of the term apocryphal as applied to the pretended sacred books was early obscured.
But a clue to it may be recognized in the so-called Fourth Book of Esdras, which relates that Estrus Era by divine inspiration composed ninety-four books. Of these, twenty-four were restorations of the sacred literature of the Israelites which had perished in the Captivity; they were to be published openly, but the remaining were to be guarded in secret for the exclusive use of the wise cf.
Accordingly it may be accepted as highly probable that in its original meaning an apocryphal writing had no unfavorable import, but simply denoted a composition which claimed a sacred origin, and was supposed to have been hidden for generations, either absolutely, awaiting the due time of its revelation, or relatively, inasmuch as knowledge of it was confined to a limited esoteric circle.
However, the name Apocrypha soon came to have an unfavourable signification which it still retains, comporting both want of genuineness and canonicity. These are the negative aspects of the modern application of the name; on its positive side it is properly employed only of a well defined class of literature, putting forth scriptural or quasi-scriptural pretensions, and which originated in part among the Hebrews during the two centuries preceding Christ and for a space after, and in part among Christians , both orthodox and heterodox, in the early centuries of our era.

The Greek fragments are P. Oxy 1 is dated shortly after CE for paleographical reasons, and the other two Greek fragments are estimated to have been written in the mid third century. The Coptic text was written shortly before the year CE. Substantial differences do exist between the Greek fragments and the Coptic text.

Bluebeard’s Castle – The Official Site
It is based on Saxon and medieval origins, but was almost totally rebuilt in to for Samuel Hood, 2nd Baron Bridport. The church contains monuments to the families of Hood Viscount Bridport and their predecessors the Viscounts Nelson, who gained the title through Horatio Nelson, 1st Viscount Nelson. These include, on the chancel south wall, a commemoration of Alexander Hood , who died in , which was designed and signed by Sir John Soane , with a black marble base topped by a white marble monument on Ionic columns framing the memorial plaque.
A note in the church states that for many years the statue was laid flat, as the white figure at night scared too many locals. The Manor House was then owned by the father-in-law of the writer Peter Spence.

Sources[ edit ] The main sources for the life of Becket are a number of biographies that were written by contemporaries. A few of these documents are by unknown writers, although traditional historiography has given them names. Besides these biographies, there is also the mention of the events of Becket’s life in the chroniclers of the time. He was the son of Gilbert Beket and Gilbert’s wife Matilda. Gilbert was perhaps related to Theobald of Bec , whose family also was from Thierville.
Gilbert began his life as a merchant, perhaps as a textile merchant, but by the s he was living in London and was a property owner, living on the rental income from his properties. He also served as the sheriff of the city at some point. One of Becket’s father’s wealthy friends, Richer de L’Aigle , often invited Thomas to his estates in Sussex where Becket was exposed to hunting and hawking.

His landscapes are of idyllic scenes. During his last years he also painted seascapes and idealized full-size pictures of rustics and country children. Early life and Suffolk period Gainsborough was the youngest son of John Gainsborough, a maker of woolen goods.
When he was 13, he persuaded his father to send him to London to study on the strength of his promise at landscape. He worked as an assistant to Hubert Gravelot , a French painter and engraver and an important figure in London art circles at the time. From him Gainsborough learned something of the French Rococo idiom , which had a considerable influence on the development of his style. Soon afterward he returned to Suffolk and settled in Ipswich in ; his daughters Mary and Margaret were born in and , respectively.
In Ipswich Gainsborough met his first biographer, Philip Thicknesse. He early acquired some reputation as a portrait and landscape painter and made an adequate living.
